It’s time to take a closer look at a common trouble spot: the basement.

Basement flooding can sneak up quickly and cause major damage—not to mention lead to mold, mildew, and expensive insurance claims. Whether you’ve experienced water issues in the past or want to stay proactive, here are some practical ways to protect your basement from springtime flooding:

1. Test your Sump Pump

Your sump pump is your first line of defense. Make sure it’s working properly by pouring a bucket of water into the pit and watching to see if it activates and drains the water. Consider a battery backup system in case of power outages.

2. Seal Cracks in Walls or Floors

Water can seep in through the tiniest openings. Check your basement walls and floor for cracks or signs of moisture and seal them with waterproof masonry or epoxy products.

3. Keep Downspouts Extended

Make sure your downspouts direct water at least 4–6 feet away from your foundation. This simple fix can prevent water from pooling near your home and finding its way inside.

4. Install a Backwater Valve

This device prevents sewage from backing up into your basement during heavy rains—a worthwhile investment for homes in flood-prone areas.

5. Move Valuables Off the Floor

Even with all the best prevention, accidents can happen. Store important items, electronics, or irreplaceable belongings on shelves or in waterproof bins.

Taking a few preventative measures now can help you avoid a major headache later—and might even lower your risk of filing a claim. If you have any questions about your current home insurance coverage or want to make sure you’re protected against flood-related damage, we’re here to help.
